True meditation is the absence of the mind seeking enlightenment
“True meditation is the absence of the mind seeking enlightenment.” Kaizen Zenji According to Patanjali and his Yoga Sutras… meditation is the inhibition of the modifications of the mind. This is a philosophical way of saying that meditation begins where the mind ends. It is the stillness of the mind that is the gateway to true meditative experience. Meditation is really just the experience of being. It is consciousness turning its awareness back upon itself and being aware of its being… moment by moment. It is a witnessing consciousness watching itself. The thinking mind then is a distraction. If you are thinking… you are thinking and not meditating. All thinking is distraction and fragments consciousness. Thinking about enlightenment is the same as any kind of thinking… it makes no difference. Rather… relinquish thinking and simply be aware of being. Again… a witnessing consciousness simply watches itself being. This week… as you sit for meditation… remind yourself and set the intention to simply be aware of yourself being. Cultivate the wakeful awareness of a witnessing consciousness simply watching itself… moment by moment. Always remember… the undistracted awareness of being is true meditation.
