The Nature of Healing, a six-part series illuminates, delights, and reveals ways to achieve true health. Hello. I'm Dr. Serene. From personal experience and listening to patients, I realized that health is more than just the absence of disease. It's a balance of mind, body, and emotions to reach a state of well-being and vitality in which you can really enjoy living. Like me, there's a growing number of Western trained doctors who combine the best of Western science and Eastern wisdom to treat their patients holistically. Join me as we explore a range of complementary therapies to discover the nature of healing. Meditation is an ancient practice used by people all over the world to enhance well-being. Crossing religious boundaries, many religious leaders were well-known for their preference for meditation. Buddha reached enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree and Jesus Christ meditated for long periods in the wilderness. There are many ways to meditate. By focusing on movement, sound, images or sensations, you can reach a state of calmness and clarity. You don't have to be religious to meditate. Just being still in nature, watching the waves is a form of meditation. If you start the day meditating, you'll feel the benefits of being relaxed and centred all day, and so will people around you. Well-known TV actress Isla Fisher works grueling hours with little opportunity for recreation and privacy. Creating time to meditate has become a priority. When my mum first started talking to me about meditation and how it could help me in my lifestyle, I sort of went, "Oh, no, I don't need to do that. I'm young. I'm happy. I'm having a good time. I don't want to sit down for 20 minutes and think about nothing." I think that that's the attitude most young people have and I think that's a shame because it doesn't matter whether you're 90 or 9, stopping and having time for yourself is very important. For me, it's clearing my mind so that when I do think and when I do make choices, I'm making a correct choice as opposed to a scrambled choice because I've got so many other things on my plate. I feel a lot more relaxed. I feel like I have slowed down my breathing. I'm breathing more from my stomach as opposed to from my chest. Yeah, I feel a lot happier because I've spent time with myself.
