Dr Deans presentatio ranscendental Meditation in Education

so it's a great pleasure to be here we view in brussels to talk about stress-free schools it's obvious that is a great deal of interest in stress-free schools did anyone here find schools stress-free when you were a school in august eight this is something you would like to have you might think it's a dream but it isn't um... there's a story that i a catholic student was talking to a hindu student and hindu student says to the catholic student well what happens in your religion after you die and the catholics as well we go to poetry if we're not perfect and then we worked throughout travels and then we go to heaven he said well what happens in your religion so they can use is all well opt-in we die we get reincarnated back on earth from the catholic says that's terrible i'd have to go back to school that's the feeling i think a lot of people have about school it's not a satisfying as it should be so what we're going to do tonight is to show how education can be truly stress-free and much more productive now with stress free schooling we don't have to change very much in education students will still be learning mathematics languages arts history philosophy economics all of the things that that up towards today but they'll be one very important addition and that is the addition all booked full development of consciousness of the student what's been missing an education is the developments of highest states of consciousness of the student and what i mean by consciousness alertness wakefulness intelligence creativity receptivity breadth of comprehension all of the qualities that make a great student that's what's been missing from education today let's think for a moment what is fundamental in education if you have a room full of intellectually gifted students but none of them a conscious not very much is going to get a lot so we can see the consciousness is more fundamental than the intellect and is anyone here a teacher yes i can i ask you a question that's great uh... what what do you think um... all the two most difficult times of the week to have to teach a class uh... okay him always ok adults that's great alright julia he'd of health club e yeah because they have a liquid lunch in brussels problem uh... so if you are a school teacher though what would you think of the two times of the week that would be most difficult yeah leno imagine you're a school teacher what would be e yes all right and e here so kate but i didn't pay to say that based only on setting up that the feeling was first thing on a monday morning is probably the most difficult time and again lasting friday afternoon so that means that already teachers know intuitively that students come to school in different states of consciousness so on a monday morning the back row of the classroom could be in the sleeping state of consciousness sleeping as a state of human consciousness whereby your still alive but you're not aware of anything if someone says if you did you have a good night's sleep and you say yes it was great what do you mean you mean you don't remember a thing about it right someone could have been willing you around brussels showing you the sites and you wouldn't have known so sleeping is a state of consciousness whereby you have nowhere nests and you have rest in the physiology and then friday afternoon the students might be in the dreaming state of consciousness web your declining dot shrugs on the blackboard and their skiing in the alps as far as they're concerned because dreaming is another state of consciousness where you have rapid eye movements and you may be going help help or whatever that's a different set of consciousness within lou sorry awareness and then says the waking state of consciousness which i think everyone is in now looks good at the back uh... where you have awareness about side objects and you have activity in the body so those of the three states of consciousness that everyone is familiar with on a continuum all going from the least awareness to the greatest awareness we would say that's sweeping is the first state of consciousness with the lowest awareness then dreaming with a little bit more awareness albeit illusory and then waking where we have a when this of outside objects now tonight we're going to love that actually there are seven states if human consciousness not just three and on that continuum before fifth sixth and seven states of consciousness have greater awareness alertness brett the comprehension receptivity creativity in intelligence than the first three so let's look at the foundations of consciousness based education what we mean by higher states of consciousness i'll introduce the research that's been done over the last fifty years i'll talk about the application in schools the application for developing for mental potential better health that a social behaviour and then how we can improve the quality of life in the whole world through consciousness based education so first the let's look at the foundation of consciousness based education if we analyze education in the simplest possible way we could say that there's a threefold structure to education there's the noah there is the process of knowing and then there is all of you here went to exhortation conventionally just like i did and you realized immediately that most of the emphasis in education today islam the known right you were always taking exams to find out how much do you know now if you think of the totality of human knowledge how much of the totality of knowledge does the average student actually no dental shelves blondes obviously it's not very much and and that's a problem because if you go to any kindergarten class what you'll find are a group of six year olds who want to know everything right had as anyone here ever had to spend the day with a six year old all right subsidy exhausting they never stop asking why why why why you can't leave it probably illegal to leave a group of kindergarten students on their own without an adult not because they're malicious spot because within two minutes someone will be putting the scissors into the power outlet to test owns law someone will be swinging on the cousins to test the tensile strength of the cut-and-dried there's this insatiable curiosity for knowledge every human being is born with the desire for total knowledge but if you take me to meet a group of sixteen year olds and we can do this is an experiment if you like uh... it's a fairly different atmosphere usually if you're standing in front of a group of sixteen year olds and you start to get really excited about some area of knowledge and goes up and they'll say but we going to be tested on this because by the time is sixteen they've given up wanting to know everything what they want to know is what do i need to get through the test so i can get the piece of paper and get out of education so the majority of students by the time they re team they dropped out of education completely and if you go onto university u_n_ dop knowing everything as you go higher in education you learn more and more about less and less so by the time you get a p_h_d_ you know almost everything about almost nothing and that fundamental desire for total knowledge remains on fulfil so just take it from the p_h_d_'s act as if they know everything but believe me even the most highly educated people in society amino a tiny fraction of the totality of knowledge and that's the problem because when our desire to total knowledge is not fulfilled then we find education not satisfying and that lack of fulfillment of decides creates stress and then the whole thing starts to go downhill so what we're going to see tonight is how we can deliver the fruits of all haulage to every single student in a very simple way and in order to do that we have to recognize that there's more than one component to education in addition to the known as also the process of knowing now how do we know anything you have to see the teacher you have to hear the teacher you have to tops the sculpture taste the cooking smell the farming on whatever disciplinarian1 you using your five1 senses1 but is anyone here ever taken a course1 too1 refine the senses as anyone taken a course to improve your sense of smell1 all lower your ordered three threshold1 so it's not really1 all that common in education today1 to as william blake would have put it1 planes the windows of perception1 physically cleanse the windows of perception will see the universe as it1 really is1 its infinite1 and then once the information is in your brain it has to be analyzed1 it has to be synthesized1 so imagine1 if you have a student who is born with a brain that's good of analysis1 then that student is probably good at mathematics1 where's the mathematics teacher today1 who can take a student who is not good1 at mathematics1 and transform that student into a great mathematician1 because they don't have the tools to be able to develop those neuronal circuits1 in the brain responsible for1 analysis1 and then we have finally the no1 again the most important part of education1 again what i mean by that is1 the level of consciousness of the student1 how awake1 how alert how intelligent how creative1 how receptive to knowledge what is that brett though1 comprehension1 so once we have a system that develops1 higher states of consciousness in the student1 cleanses the windows of perception1 we can deliver1 the food of all knowledge1 to every student1 so how do we do that1 as i mentioned before1 there are seven states of human consciousness1 his sleeping dreaming and waking1 and in waking1 we have1 awareness1 outside objects1 so this girl he s could say i am1 away ralph1 back in nineteen seventy dot the robert keith wallace published1 landmark paper in science magazine1 and in that1 journal he reported1 a fourth state of consciousness of fourth major state of consciousness1 known as1 transcendental1 consciousness1 in transcendental consciousness which is easily achieved through the technique of1 transcendental meditation1 we close our eyes1 u_n_ a settles down to final evans of thinking final levels of thinking1 we transcend1 the south list impulsive thoughts1 an experience that field of pua silent awareness1 at the source a fool1 the mind is quiet1 fully awake1 so just as in waking you could say you have to you1 experience of1 iron aware of the book1 in transcendental consciousness you have the experience of i am aware1 pua awareness1 and because the mind and body or intimately related1 as the mental activity settles down to a state1 of least excitation of consciousness1 the body settles into a deeper level of rest and relax ation1 and in that deep level of rest1 the body is able to revitalize and rejuvenate itself1 dissolved deeply rooted stress and strain and fifty1 that are not released during sleep1 so physiologist the saying today that to become a fully developed human being1 you must have regular experience of these four states of consciousness1 obviously you have to have regular sleeping that's obvious1 you have to have regular dreaming otherwise you'll go psychotic1 you have to have regular waking otherwise there's no life1 but you also need to have regular experience1 of transcendental consciousness otherwise as we'll see1 the brain fails to fully developed1 and the body accumulate stress and this is the root cause of this epidemic1 of stress related disorders that is plaguing our modern society1 and threatening to bankrupt1 every country in the western world over the next twenty five years1 because doctors are saying today that probably eighty to ninety percent1 of all of the patients they see in their offices every day1 have some problem that is related1 or aggravated by stress1 so it's a very very great discovery this fourth state of consciousness1 so what we do in education then1 is the first thing we do in the morning when the students coming to school or1 university1 is they set the fifteen minutes1 they practice the transcendental meditation technique which is effortless1 natural any strive to learn it1 snorter religion doesn't involve any philosophy or change in lifestyle1 just a simple technique1 that children can learn no matter what their intellectual capacity1 and they sit for fifteen minutes and they practice transcendental meditation1 mind dives deep within1 to the source of that total creative potential1 body gets deeply rested1 daf two fifteen minutes they come out refreshed1 rejuvenated revitalized1 more clear-headed more intelligent more creative1 and then they study mathematics and art1 and science and philosophy1 play sports1 they're doing it now fraum1 a high a level of consciousness1 and this has been very successfully end1 tributes that schools around the world1 and in fact has been studied in over six hundred scientific studies1 conducted over two hundred and fifty1 research1 institutes and universities1 all over the world1 and what's been found is quite remarkable1 the this one simple technique1 caves a wide range of benefits so for example it develops the total brain and1 i'll explain what that means1 that's a new concept in education1 developing the whole brain1 take increases creativity and intelligence1 now you might think awed by state university longer1 then i'll become more intelligent1 but actually if you look at the research1 if you take something like fluid intelligence1 then fluid intelligence increases until you're about eighteen1 then it starts to level off1 and then off for about thirty1 it stops a slogan inexorable1 so if you take too long of your p_h_d_1 you'll be less intelligent when you get it1 than you were in high school1 that just tells us there's something missing1 from education1 it improves job performance reduces stress and anxiety1 promotes health and longevity1 in hans is relationships1 and promotes1 piece1 we might ask how can one simple thing1 have such a global range of benefits and that is because1 this one simple thing is fundamental1 it's developing higher states of consciousness1 unconsciousness is the most fundamental level1 you were conscious1 you wouldn't exist1 and if you did exist you wouldn't know1 you existed1 so that you have to have1 consciousness were successful1 so this is the new face of education1 now this made a very unusual if you want your son or daughter1 to go to the university of brussels1 do you want them to spend that time at school sitting around with their eyes1 shut1 item enough a person like me who was brought up conventional you'd look at1 this and say but you can't have this this child could spend this time1 studying differential calculus or learning mandarin chinese or something1 useful1 but you know there's always more than one way to do something1 there's the obvious way1 and then there's the more subtle but more effective way1 so if i were to give you an arrow1 and i say i want this arrow in the target1 a hundred meters away1 you can run the hundred meters with the arrow and stick it in the target1 and from the outside it looks like you one of these ready hardworking1 get up and go to let's get the job done kind of people1 that's a better way1 and that is to use a technique1 and that technique is1 the bow1 now think what happens when you fire boat you put the arrow on the boat1 and it's1 resting1 dot it's useless1 if you let the arrow go from there you'll just shoot yourself1 in the foot1 what you have to do is1 not just have the arrow in a state of silence but you have to through all the1 arrow in the opposite direction to u_s_ you wanted to go1 you take it to a state of dynamic silence1 where it's at its full potential1 and then you let go1 and then the arrow hits the target and that's what these students are doing1 their awareness is diving spontaneously within1 to the source of that total creative potential1 and then when they come out of meditation1 that increase creativity1 an intelligent gets applied1 to everything they put their mind to it1 so for example at marshy schooler bipin director for over1 twenty years now at constantly amazes me every year i think could they possibly1 win anything more1 and every year they do1 and it's amazing like1 a study in the journal education1 showed that students entering marshy school1 are about average1 by the time they get into high school year after year classes school in the1 top one percent1 of all the schools1 in the united states1 with no entrance exams to the school1 as students1 wind state science fair1 last year every student from iowa1 who went to the international science fair was from marshy school they've won2 the american2 high school mathematics exam four years in a row2 they've won more of the top awards2 in speech in drama in the state of iowa since they started competing in nineteen2 eighty eight2 than any other school2 in the state2 one-seventeen state tennis championships the history fair the international2 photography competitions2 but i think the most amazing achievement is their creativity2 their international problem solving competitions2 cold destination imagination and2 policy of the mind2 which schools all over the world competing2 and they have to solve a problem2 they have about three months to solve a problem and present the solution to the2 judges2 and then on the day of the competition2 they given what's called a spontaneous problem2 and they have eight minutes to solve it in front of the judges2 and marshy school students have won the world championships now four times2 which is more often than any other school2 in the world2 and also they've had more top ten finishes2 in the world finals2 than any other school in the world2 and i was in poland2 i met with the director of destination imagination for poland and she said to2 me2 when you keep finding2 these creative students year after year2 i said i don't2 i don't go out and find creative students2 we take any student2 but we teach them2 how to find the source of that2 infinite creativity and intelligence2 deep within themselves that's the secret2 all success2 so what's happening here is something2 that is fundamental2 and so let's take a moment2 and consider what is the most fundamental level of life2 and then let's go further and say2 what is the most fundamental level2 of the entire2 universe2 and today in twenty thirteen2 we can also that question2 let's look at the onset firstly from2 the field off physics2 physics is the most object of science2 physicist don't like things that are alive2 they don't like to study cats and dogs and things the bite and scratch2 they like things that the runaway2 and mess up your experiment2 so what2 happens in physics totally objective2 and imagine2 how physics started2 maybe five hundred years ago2 a couple of people was sitting together2 and once said to the other2 you know shotgun wondering2 what is this universe in which we live2 when did it come from2 what is it made elf2 where's it going2 and so philippe said well2 why don't we find out2 and that's what they did2 they built telescopes microscopes particle accelerators2 and they began to proto more a more deeply2 into the object if universe2 outside of themselves2 and what they found was quite surprising2 on the surface nature seems to be infinitely diverse2 and constantly changing2 everyone in this room looks different2 and you look different to the projector and the protective looks different to a2 tree an entry that's different to a star a galaxy we have this infinite diverse2 city2 and constant change2 this room looks different than it did an hour ago2 or a week ago2 all ten thousand years ago2 that's the experience of the universe in which we live2 but as you probe deepa to find the levels of physical existence2 you find that the universe is structured in layers2 so beneath the surface level of diverse city2 there's elena off2 molecules2 and then there's a layer of2 atoms2 and then there's a layer of nuclei2 and then there's the sop nuclear level of cool syndrome2 and as you go deeper you find2 that nature becomes progressively more2 unified2 so by the time you get to a-level about one one hundredth2 the radius of the proton2 you find that there are four fundamental forces of nature2 and for fundamental categories of particle2 plus the higgs goes up2 and over the last forty years2 physicists a fountain2 that it deeper move deeper2 levels2 nature becomes progressively more unified2 culminating today2 in the discovery all completely mathematically consistent2 quantum field theories2 it's a supreme achievement of the human intellect2 that we can now write down one equation2 and that equation can predict2 very accurately2 the universe in which we2 they've today2 so if you lost a physicist today2 what is the nature of the universe2 they'll say well actually2 there's only one thing that the whole universe is made up2 there's one single unified field2 which is completely non changing its internal2 it was there before the big bang2 it'll be they're off to the big crunch of the big rick depending which2 cosmological model you fancy today2 anong changing field2 interacts with itself2 and vibrates within itself2 and then those vibrations appear is electrons protons atoms molecules d_n_a_2 human beings human brains2 pinas2 trees stars galaxies2 old universe everyone and everything2 is the play and display2 of one2 single unified field2 so it really is2 at uni bus2 all at the ivor city2 is2 unified2 let's suppose that you were that student in kindergarten who survived high school2 like i did2 and you go on to2 university with the desire2 to know2 everything2 and you go to the registrar at the university of brussels and say you know2 here i am on2 eighteen2 i want to know everything2 and the register i would say well i'm afraid2 you comms2 you have to take a mathematics one of our nor2 literature one oh one or in your case i'd recommend psychology one oh one2 because you have very strange ideas2 and2 you wonder well you know maybe i'll take phys maybe i'll study electronic size2 costar the2 elec tronic so my whole life2 when i know everything2 no i probably wouldn't be able to pass an exam in nuclear physics2 and over here i could drawer a diagram showing how all of chemistry comes from2 the unified field2 how all of2 biology comes from the unified field2 how all of economics comes from the unified field where no one seems to know2 anything about any of the boxes2 as far as i can see today2 the point is2 we could ask the question2 you obviously ka game total knowledge on the divers defied level of knowledge2 because it's infinite2 but is there one thing that you could know2 my which everything else could be no2 you can see it on the job2 one thing you can't know by which everything else could be done and that2 would be the unified field2 if you could know the unified field you'd have2 the source of all of the knowledge all the information all the organizing power2 of the entire2 divers2 universe2 think of it like this2 you could have a tree2 where you had leaves2 and you could have a p_h_d_ in photosynthesis studying the leaves2 and you could have fruits and branches in petals and you could have all this2 infinite divest leave the tree2 with hundreds of p_h_d_'s devoting their lives to understanding bach conseil than2 all of this2 of adult child2 can hold the seat of the tree in the palm of the hand2 and if you've got the cd2 then you've got all the knowledge and information2 of the whole tree2 unified field can be looked upon as the seed of the universe2 entire universe comes from2 the interaction of unified field with itself so if you know the unified field2 you know the field of total knowledge2 but the question is how do you get at it2 because if you've ever studied physics you know you molecular physics is one2 thing atomic physics is another thing quantum mechanics is a little more2 obstruct2 quantum field theory is more obstruct2 super string theory2 is morris tracked and theory is more abstract2 it starts to get more a more difficult to comprehend these supplementals of2 nature2 and even if you wrote down2 all of the equations of the unified field2 then what use the baby2 but if you spent twenty years from now if you got inspired by this lecture2 which you won't i'm sure that if you did on just plain yet2 if you were to get inspired by the lecture and then go i'm going to learn2 about the unified field of study physics2 he spent twenty years2 working all the equations aapne understanding everything2 then um...2 work it out2 with these equations make you well thing2 physicist and get paid very much2 with they make you healthy2 now your doctor wouldn't understand them2 but they make you happy2 they make a spouse happy2 will most certainly not if you just spent twenty years locked in your office2 working on equation2 so the point is2 they actually great intellectual satisfaction2 not much use2 but here's the million2 euro question2 as we say2 uh...2 we've seen that the unified field is the source of atoms and molecules of d_n_a_2 in human beings and human brains2 it must also be the source of human consciousness3 unified field is not only the source of objectivity stunts by definition3 it must also be the source of3 subject of existence3 mind intellect3 feelings emotions insulation ego3 they're all expressions of the unified field3 so what is3 instead off or in addition to3 exploring nature3 at final apples outside3 about celebs3 what if we close our eyes3 we practice a simple technique of meditation3 transcendental meditation3 and we experienced finer and finer levels of the thought3 inside3 of ourselves3 transcend this artist in parts of sorts3 an experience that field of pua3 silent awareness3 the source all3 now you might think well that sounds very difficult3 i could never sit in that debate3 my mind is always running off here running up there in a busy practical3 person i couldn't do it3 think for a moment the mind is like an allusion3 when you go down to the ocean what do you struck by first3 the beauty of the way scratching on the floor3 so you have a wave comes on the way it goes in a wave comes on the way it goes3 and you know3 if the ocean has the ability to be active3 it naturally has the ability to be less active3 and less active3 and when the sock list impulse of the waves his transcend it3 then you have won the silent unbounded ocean3 but that silent state of the ocean3 is the source of every possible way3 just like that in the mind3 four comes a four goes a fool comes the photos may be a having a rough day3 and you have lots of votes just like the ocean3 would have lots of ways3 but if you'll mind has the ability to be active3 him actually has the ability to be less active3 less active and when the sock list impulse of forties transcended3 you experience once islands3 unbounded ocean3 of consciousness3 and that silent state of awareness3 is the source of every possible fold3 and it's the experience all the source of thoughts3 that has been missing from education3 thousands opinion3 now what would be the value of giving a student3 the experience3 the source3 awful3 well may deal that student i had this experience you probably have this3 experience3 usually you have this experience in second year3 university what did you study in university3 speech teaching very good so you were sitting in the second you university of3 studying the book3 uh... called the introduction to speech therapy3 and you're sitting there thinking you know3 i'm learning a lot about speech therapy3 but i wish i knew more about music3 and arts3 and philosophy3 and history3 and economics and cosmology and3 you know what i'd like to do3 i'd like to go down to the library3 and lock myself in3 read every single book in the library3 and become a fully educated human being3 but of course you never did that3 because you get to the library you open the door3 there's ten million books3 and you just feel depressed3 when you go from here what it what you have to do is realize3 those books came from somewhere3 web is a book come from3 obviously a book comes from a printer3 and the printer is attached to a word processor3 and the word processor has a keyboard3 and the keyboard is activated by the fingers of an offer3 and the fingers of the author are setting down the fort in the mind of the3 author3 every book in the library3 is actually fossilized3 human thought3 and students spend a whole careers studying the fragmented3 fossilized thoughts of all the people3 and they never have the experience3 of the source of their own thinking3 but if all the knowledge in the library3 came from3 fort3 then the souls of human fault3 must be the source of total knowledge3 and that was marching life you these great insight3 the total knowledge3 is structured in consciousness3 at the source of thoughts3 of every human being3 and the goal of education is to give the experience3 to the students3 of the source of total knowledge within3 so you give them the experience of total knowledge3 and then from there3 you give them3 the partial knowledge3 so but3 pots of knowledge3 always connected3 to the totality3 now this is not a new idea3 if you take the word for education in quiz show in french3 anti-castro3 becomes3 from latin3 educa ray3 it means3 on a3 lead out or to lead out3 it doesn't mean3 to cram in3 that means exactly the opposite means to lead out if you speak german the word is3 uh...3 building3 which means building3 house3 florian dot sh3 when the lights3 what goes on device means means underneath3 is the wisdom3 i was just in slovenia where the where it is uh...3 which anya3 and culture is the iron you chengyu means to be looking3 within3 i haven't been to a country yet3 where education means3 cramming in3 goes i haven't been to a country yet with a democrat name3 it's that the meaning of education has been lost3 what did the ancient greeks say it was the most important thing in education3 what does that they'll pick article3 inscriptions say3 know yourself3 now where is yourself3 who are you3 okay3 who are live they say3 know yourself aware it yourself3 here's the stuff this level of the mind3 the level of the th
